Quassia is indigenous to Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Suriname, Colombia, Argentina, and Guyana where it is used extensively for various health benefits. The herb is extremely bitter, the name amargo means "bitter" in Spanish. The general name, Quassia, comes from a man named Quassi of Surinam who had incredible success using it as a secret ingredient for a particularly bad fever that was running rampant through Surinam.
The quassia tree grows from 50 to 100 feet high; it has smooth, gray bark and alternate, odd-pinnate leaves with oblong, pointed leaflets. Its small flowers are yellowish or greenish, its fruit is a small rupe about the size of a pea.
In the Amazon rainforest, Quassia is considered a tonic, and has been used for fevers and also as a bitter digestive aid. Quassia has also been used to support healthy liver and gall bladder function as well as for blood support. Quassia is great for natural upset stomach relief as well as "gas".
