The laxative properties of psyllium are due to the swelling of the husk when it comes in contact with water. This forms a gelatinous mass that keeps feces hydrated and soft, provided it is taken with sufficient water.

Research has shown that psyllium intake may reduce hunger feelings and energy intake. Ground seed, always taken with at least two-thirds cup (approximately 150 ml) of water. If not grinding, soak in warm water for 2 to 6 hours before use. May also be taken as an extract and sometimes as a capsule, though rare.
