Muslin is a light cotton fabric, finely woven and typically white, that was first imported from the Middle East to Europe in the 17th century. It is named after Mosul in modern-day Iraq, the city through which it made its way to Europe, but Dhaka in modern-day Bangladesh is the fabric's true place of origin. Muslin Money Bags News: When town committee members were crawling around in the Bradford Town Hall attic last year, they were examining the structural soundness of the historic building, not hunting for treasure. But Gary Wahl discovered a rolled up muslin sheet there that turned out to be an important historic theatrical backdrop that dated to the town hall's turn-of-the-century life as a theater.



Now, historic preservationists in the town have raised more than $10,000 to restore the painting, thanks to an art sale supported by local businesses and residents and a restoration grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. The grant will allow the painting to be cleaned and its torn muslin repaired as part of the Vermont Stage Curtain Project.
