Also known as- Centella asiatica, Brahmi, Indian Pennywort, Marsh Penny, Spadeleaf, and Pennywort
Gotu Kola, also known as Indian Pennywort is one of the most widely used and important Ayurvedic herbs on the market today. This ground cover species is weed like especially, in parts of India and Hawaii where it grows prolifically in unusual conditions, such as drainage ditches, gutters and neglected areas. Don't let its wild predomination scare you, Gotu Kola is also one of the largest cultivated crops and thrives under organic farming conditions. While popularly used as a food source in the form of leafy greens within Bangladesh, Thailand and Sri Lanka it also has been internationally recognized within many countries pharmacopoeias and has been a valid, recognized, botanical medicine since 1884.
Gotu kola helps keep your veins in good condition
Studies have found that Gotu kola contains a plant chemical called Tri-Terpenic Fraction of Centella Asiatica (TTFCA), which is particularly beneficial for varicose veins.
TTFCA stimulates the growth of connective tissues, such as collagen and elastin, which are needed for supporting and strengthening the walls of your veins.
This natural chemical also maintains the internal lining of your veins by promoting the growth of cells that line them. This is important because if the internal lining of your veins becomes damaged, blood and fluids can escape into your surrounding tissues. This can cause inflammation and swelling, eventually resulting in varicose veins.
Improves blood flow and helps prevent lethal blood clots
Gotu kola may also prevent a more serious condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) from developing - whereby vein enlargement and loss of elasticity causes the pressure inside the veins of your legs to gradually build up.
When this pressure reaches a certain level in your veins, the circulation of blood soon becomes sluggish, leading to swelling and discolouration of the surrounding skin. This can eventually result in thrombosis (blood clotting), which can be fatal.
In one study, researchers found that patients taking 60mg of TTFCA twice a day for eight weeks showed noticeable improvements in blood circulation. This not only occurred in major veins but also in smaller veins (called capillaries) that carry blood and nutrients to your tissues.

Summary
The widespread belief that Gotu Kola helps improve memory led to several studies on its effect on the central nervous and circulatory systems. The preliminary results suggest that it may help with memory and cognitive disabilities as well as helping the body overcome stress and fatigue. However it should be noted that those with mild to moderate depression might want to use caution. Some testing done in India indicates it may act as a very mild depressant.
Precautions
None noted
The adult dosage of gotu kola may vary depending on the condition being treated. An appropriately trained and certified herbalist, such as a naturopath, can provide the necessary guidance.
The standard dose of gotu kola varies depending on the form:
Dried herb—to make tea, add ¼ to ½ tsp dried herb to a cup of boiling water (150 mL) for 10 minutes, 3 times a day
Powdered herb (available in capsules)—1,000 to 4,000 mg, 3 times a day
Tincture (1:2, 30% alcohol)—30 to 60 drops (equivalent to 1.5 to 3 mL – there are 5 mL in a teaspoon), 3 times a day
Standardized extract—60 to 120 mg per day; standardized extracts should contain 40% asiaticoside, 29% to 30% asiatic acid, 29% to 30% madecassic acid, and 1% to 2% madecassoside; doses used in studies mentioned in the treatment section range from 20 mg (for scleroderma) up to 180 mg (in one study for venous insufficiency; although, most of the studies for this latter condition were conducted using 90 mg to 120 mg per day).
The recommended dosage for people with insomnia is ½ tsp of dried herb in a cup of water taken for no more than 4 to 6 weeks.
