The Fo-ti plant is native to Taiwan and Japan, but originated in China. In traditional Chinese medicine, premature aging, infectious diseases, erectile dysfunction, vaginal discharges, angina pectoris, and weakness are treated with the Fo-ti plant’s root.
Known by the Chinese as he-shou-wu, fo-ti received its name from a man who used the plant to heal his infertility. The medicinal herb then became used throughout China to treat problems including infections, aging, erectile dysfunction, vaginal problems, and angina.
What gives Fo-ti its medicinal properties?
Fo-ti includes chemical compounds including tannins, tetrahydroxystilbene glucoside, anthraquinones, and phospholipids. Cholesterol levels in the body are lowered by the combination of these chemicals. Fo-ti’s abilities to eliminate fatty deposits found in the blood and to prevent atherosclerosis are being researched.
Human studies have not been conducted the prove fo-ti’s suspected ability to work as an antibacterial substance, to stimulate the immune system, and to increase the forming of red blood cells.
Fo-ti has been used in connection with the following conditions:
* Atherosclerosis
* Constipation
* Fatigue
* High cholesterol
* Insomnia
* Immune function
* Erectile dysfunction
* Parkinson's disease
* Alzheimer's disease
Side Effects
Mild side effects such as skin rash and diarrhea may occur while taking fo-ti. Numbness in the arms and legs can occur when an excess of 15 processed grams of fo-ti are taken daily. Side effects are considered minimal.
Dosage and Administration
There is not a recommended daily dose; however, 4-8 grams, or 1-1 ½ teaspoons can be ingested each day. To prepare tea, boil ½ - 1 teaspoon of root in a cup of water (250 ml) for 10 minutes. Drink at least 3 cups daily. Fo-ti can also be taken in tablet form. 500 mg can be ingested three times each day.

RECIPE FUN WITH FO-TI!
Fo-Ti Tootsie Rolls:
This taste so much like the tootsie rolls of my youth. I know some of the ingredients are weird, but the fo-ti I found at www.SharpWebLabs.com.
Ingredients
* 1 cup raw cocoa powder
* ½ cup mesquite powder
* ½ cup almond butter
* ¾ cup agave or raw honey
* 2 tablespoons fo-ti
* 2 tablespoons lucuma powder
* 1 tablespoon vanilla, or use seeds from 1 pod
* pinch of salt
Preparation
Put all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. roll into individual pieces and place on wax paper or parchment paper. Cover with saran wrap and put in freezer. Eat straight out of freezer. Good stuff when you’re craving something chewing, chocolatey and sweet.
Rawbucks Iced Mocha
Makes 1 serving...
I actually got the idea for this drink from a recipe I found through the Sunny Raw Kitchen site. The recipe was called “Best Coffee Ever”. It was very good, but a little too thick, and strong. So, I made some changes after many trial and errors with the recipe. I finally came up with this rendition, which I truly found delicious! I hope you do too.
One note: I recommend you use “heaping” scoops of the raw cacao powder, and heaping tablespoons of the raw carob. It’s okay to use a little more of both then not.
Ingredients
* 1 Scoop, Raw Cacao Powder
* 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon Powder
* 1 tablespoon Maca Powder
* 1 tablespoon Fo-Ti Root or 1/2 Tbsp Fo-Ti Powder
* 1½ teaspoons Vanilla Extract
* 1 Squirt, Agave (generous)
* 6 drops SweetLeaf Liquid Stevia - Chocolate Flavor
* 2 cups Nut Milk (I used Macadamia/Almond), Use more or less depending upon consistency desired.
* 1 Handful, Macadamia Nuts
* 4 Ice cubes, or more
* dash Nutmeg
Preparation
Place all ingredients into a blender (except the ice). Blend on high till well mixed, then add ice. Blend again on high until smooth and frothy. Pour into your favorite glass and add a sprig of mint, or you can add raw chocolate sauce. It’s very yummy and very satisfying…and it makes you feel real good!
