Historically, blessed thistle has been recommended as a treatment for stomach upset, indigestion, constipation and gas. Some individuals employ this herbs, as they would its cousin milk thistle, as a remedy for gallbladder and liver disorders. However, there is only limited clinical evidence to support it use medicinally. Notwithstanding, many individuals report that blessed thistle is an effective medicinal healing herb.
Blessed thistle has been used for centuries as a flavoring for Benedictine liqueur. It is approved by the German E Commission as an appetite enhancer and by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as flavoring for alcoholic drinks.
Dosage and Administration
Note: Blessed thistle and milk thistle are different plants with distinctly different properties and uses. Do not use any thistle product if you are unsure of its origin.
Recommended doses of blessed thistle range from 1,500 mg to 6,000 mg(1.5 grams to 6 grams) a day. Blessed thistle can be used to make a tea by soaking about 1/2 teaspoon (approximately 2 grams) of dried blessed thistle in about 5 ounces of boiling water for 10 or 15 minutes. The solid particles should be removed before drinking the tea. Because the tea has a bitter taste, it is often sweetened before drinking.
For topical use, either a soft, clean cloth may be soaked in blessed thistle tea or the solid parts left after a tea is made may be folded into a cloth and then the cloth applied to the affected area.

Summary
Blessed thistle is used to treat digestive ailments fundamentally caused by insufficient secretion of stomach acid. The herbÍs bitter taste triggers a reflex reaction that releases gastric juices into the stomach, especially those needed to digest fats. For this reason, modern herbalists agree that the plant is helpful for loss of appetite, upset stomach, and gas„although it may be better to take the herb before these symptoms occur (such as before eating a fatty meal), rather than after. The herb is also antibacterial.
Site Effects and Interactions
Blessed thistle is usually considered safe when used at recommended doses for short durations. Some people experience stomach discomfort, such as vomiting. Other potential side effects include skin rash or eye irritation. Adverse effects may be the consequence of blessed thistle allergies.
