Introduction
By popular request from our granny we added Blessed Thistle to our tea category. The taste is rather unique so you will either love it or hate it. Please let us know how much you enjoyed your first cup of Blessed Thistle tea! Blessed thistle is believed to have originated in areas around the Mediterranean Sea. It now grows as a weed in most mild and warm climates. Smaller than some other thistles, blessed thistle plants are usually between 12 and 20 inches tall, with thick stems and long, deeply toothed leaves. Both the stems and leaves are covered with fuzz and the leaves have sharp, spiny, thorn-like projections. Small yellow flowers bloom during most of the summer. The part of blessed thistle that is used in medicine is called the "flowering tops", which consists of flowers, leaves, and upper stems -- gathered while the plants are in full bloom, and then chopped and dried for use. Blessed thistle has been used for centuries as a flavoring for Benedictine liqueur. It is approved by the German E Commission as an appetite enhancer and by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as flavoring for alcoholic drinks.
Dosage and Administration
Recommended doses of blessed thistle range from 1,500 mg to 6,000 mg(1.5 grams to 6 grams) a day. Blessed thistle can be used to make a tea by soaking about 1/2 teaspoon (approximately 2 grams) of dried blessed thistle in about 5 ounces of boiling water for 10 or 15 minutes. The solid particles should be removed before drinking the tea. Because the tea has a bitter taste, it is often sweetened before drinking.
Precautions
Generally not recommended during pregnancy. If you are allergic to artichokes, avoid this herb.
