Aloe is a plant of dry sandy places and hillsides. It is distinguished by its fleshy, cactus-like appearance. There are several species of the Aloe plant all natives of warm climates, they are one of the most famed plants of Arabian medicine. In East Africa, Aloe is an ancient medicinal plant that is still very popular in herbal human and livestock medicine.

The Aloe species that grow in the wild in Kenya include Aloe kedongensis Reynolds and Aloe fibrosa.

Aloe does all that Ashford describes (and more) according to folk wisdom, anecdotal evidence and isolated medical case histories. Over a hundred medical disorders have been treated including arthritis, gout, acne, cuts, headaches, high blood pressure, hair loss, rheumatism, mouth diseases, burns and many more.

Scientific evidence
However, scientific research on Aloe is contradictory for some of these uses. There are two different types of medicinal juice that can be extracted from the leaves of Aloe, a bitter yellow milky fluid (latex) and a clear thin jelly-like substance (gel). Research on the latex confirms that it is a powerful drug for emptying the bowels that should be used carefully.

On the other hand research on the gel is inconclusive, substances have been found which could act as painkillers, anti-biotic and wound-healers. In human trials, the effects have not been consistent, this inconsistency is due to a number of factors: the gel from one plant to the next is different depending on the climate, when it was harvested, the age of the plant and so on.
