What Has 7 Times More Vitamin C Than Oranges & 4 Times More Vitamin A Than Carrots?

Happy Wednesday to all! So do you know what the answer is? There is one herb which we have had our eyes on for some time and it truly has amazed us with its true superman style nutrition dense profile and it comes from a tree – The Moringa Tree. Yes, the leaves from this amazing tree are putting up some eye opening nutrient numbers. Is this tree the new epitome of the green superfood?

The Wonderful Moringa Tree

The Moringa tree (Moringa Oleifera) is a slender, semi-deciduous, perennial tree that grows to about 10 meters tall, with drooping branches. It thrives in subtropical and tropical climates, giving fruit and flowers continually. However, the drought resistant Moringa grows best in dry, sandy soil. This makes it an ideal tree to grow in semi-desert conditions, as it provides both food and shade. The Moringa is a fast growing tree that can reach up to 3 meters in its first year. Every part of the Moringa tree can be used from the leaves to the roots, providing a rich source of food and medicine. The leaves are said to be a rich source of nutrients.

Directions: Mix 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 grams) of our organic Moringa Leaf Powder powder with 4-6 oz of juice, smoothie, water or yogurt. Take up to two times daily.

Moringa Benefits

The moringa tree is rich in iron and potassium, growing in tropical settings, and produces so many useful vitamins that many call it “the miracle tree.” With four times the amount of vitamin A in carrots, the moringa gives great benefits for those with eye and vision problems. Plant scientist Fuglie says. “In theThird World, there are hundreds — thousands — of people who go blind every year for lack of vitamin A.”

The Great Moringa Leaf

The leaves of Moringa provide many nutrients which can be eaten fresh or dried in a variety of recipes. According to a scientific report from optima of Africa, 25 grams daily of Moringa leaf powder “will give a child the following suggested daily allowances: protein 42%, calcium 125%, magnesium 60%, potassium 41%, iron 71%, vitamin A 272%, vitamin C 22%”. These same benefits also applies to adults and senior citizens. This clearly tells us that, Moringa is beneficial for people of all ages.

Moringa is one of the very few natural foods that contain chlorophyll along with many other nutrients (vitamins, minerals, proteins, beneficial fats), and has a neutral taste. Dark leafy green vegetables and herbs like Romaine lettuce, spinach, or parsley are great sources of chlorophyll, however they do not provide many of the other nutrients of Moringa.

Moringa cleans you out and rebuilds you at the same time with its many nutrients. You should drink lots of water. Through the action of the Moringa, it will cleanse you via the bowels. You can also take hot baths to assist in the cleansing through the pores in the skin.

In a statement by Dr. Monica G. Marcu, researcher and clinical pharmacologist, Moringa “is unique because, even in small amounts, it can supply daily a wide gamut of vital nutrients with few calories.”

Overall, Moringa has four times the vitamin A of carrots, twice the protein of milk (and four times the calcium), seven times the vitamin C of oranges, and three times the potassium of bananas. Moringa also has three times the iron of spinach, and high in Omega 3′s.

Our Best Moringa Leaves

I highly recommend this nutritive plant typically sold in powder form if you are a lactating mother, athlete, growing child, studying student, elder, or any individual interested in maintaining general health.

Calcium as we know is a vital macroelement for human health. A cup of milk or yogurt could apply 300-400 mg; however 8 ounces of Moringa leaves contain 1,000 mg calcium. Moringa leaf powder of the same weight (8 ounces) contains over 4,000 mg calcium. Moringa is extremely high in iron. Three ounces (about 100g) has 7 mg of iron, while the leaf powder has 28mg.

Vitamin C, one of the most disputed, talked about and supplemented vitamins in the world is found in Moringa in large quantities. 100 g of Moringa leaves contain more than 200 mg vitamin C, while 100 g of orange juice has only about 40mg.

Moringa Tea

You can use our pure moringa leaf powder to make a super healthy cup of tea also! Mix just 1/2 teaspoon per cup. Moringa powder stores okay without refrigeration. Keep away from heat and light though. A pound should last you 1-2 months with regular use.

Moringa & Weight Loss

There is twice as much calcium in Moringa leaves than in milk. Iron is found in large quantities in Moringa leaves as well. In fact, there is three times as much iron in this plant than in spinach. Along with these specific nutrients, the leaves can be consumed to stimulate your metabolism, thus aiding in weight loss. This is possible because Moringa provides energy without sugar. The leaves can also be used to beautify your skin, thus they are commonly taken as supplement by women looking for healthier skin.

Cinnamon cassia & Cinnamon “Ceylon” zeylanicum

Happy Wednesday to all! I just got off the phone with one of our customers who was a bit baffled by the cinnamon she got. Kelly called us and expressed concerns about the cinnamon sticks she got. She grinds up her own sticks for various recipes and noticed that these sticks were not like the sticks she is used to getting at her local health food store, which by the way she pays almost twice the price for.

Anyway, we looked up her order and noticed that she ordered our Cinnamon zeylanicum sticks. These sticks are different from the typical Cinnamon cassia sticks that are commonly found in US stores. So we figured we would pass this message along to all our readers to help understand these two very similar but very different types of cinnamon. Below is a copy of our conversation with Kelly, who by the way is a fantastic cook and sent us her homemade cinnamon buns during the holiday! She lives right up the road in Ormond Beach, FL and loves cooking with our pure organic vanilla bean powder and organic cinnamon.

“Hi Kelly, we just pulled up your order. It seems the cinnamon you ordered was the Cinnamon zeylanicum, also known as Ceylon “True” Cinnamon. The word Ceylon was the original name given to Sri Lanka back in the 1500′s. The cinnamon produced there is of a lighter color and smoother taste. The cinnamon we are familiar with here in America is Cinnamon cassia. This cinnamon has a darker color and a more pronounced flavor due to the volatile oil content. Additionally, the cassia sticks are very hard to grind up while the zeylanicum sticks can be easily ground or crushed and consist of several brittle layers.

Picture of Our Cinnamon cassia Sticks

Cinnamon zeylanicum “Ceylon” quills are classified as follows:

The Sri Lankan grading system divides the cinnamon quills into four groups:
Alba, less than 6 mm (0.24 in) in diameter
Continental, less than 16 mm (0.63 in) in diameter
Mexican, less than 19 mm (0.75 in) in diameter
Hamburg, less than 32 mm (1.3 in) in diameter

The one big benefit of using Ceylon cinnamon over Cassia is the absence of coumarin. Coumarin is a chemical compound found in herbs such as Cinnamon cassia and Tonka Beans. Coumarin is used as an aroma enhancer in pipe tobaccos and certain alcoholic drinks and is banned from being used as a flavor food additive. Cinnamon cassia contains a modest amount of coumarin while Ceylon “True” Cinnamon zeylanicum has at most trace amounts. This is why many choose Ceylon over Cassia.

Flax Seeds vs. Chia Seeds – Now Fight!

Greetings, Happy New Year and a very happy Friday to all of our blog readers and FaceBook friends! We are so excited to be approaching 500 FaceBook fans for our herb store! All this in under a year of creating our Florida Herb House FB page. Thanks again everyone! Please come say hi at www.FaceBook.com/FloridaHerbs.

If there is one question that is asked to us quite often it would be for us to declare whether Flax Seeds or Chia Seeds are better for you. We sell quite a bit of both seeds and to be totally honest, we have not really taken the time to unveil the good and bad of each seed – but now we will. In recent times we have seen many health experts write off the Flax Seed to make way for the new sheriff in town; The Chia! But we are not ready to fall on that bandwagon yet. Dedicated to our customers and eager to dig a little deeper on the subject, we set out to find the answer.

To begin with, both of our Flax and Chia seeds are organic grown and chemical free. They are harvested according to strict organic standards and without the use of fertilizers and other harmful chemicals. That’s a big plus for each! Additionally, both seeds are gluten free and Non GMO (i.e., Genetically Modified Organism) which puts them side by side so far. But what seed is more of a superseed? Well, lets start with the basics. We took an ounce of each seed and here is what we found.

Calories – The Chia Seed wins with only 137 calories per ounce compared to a slightly higher 150 calories per ounce for the Flax Seed. CHIA WINS!

Protein - The Flax Seed edges out the Chia for total protein weighing in at 5.1 grams per ounce compared to 4.4 grams in the Chia. FLAX WINS!

Fiber – Chia takes first place for fiber with 10.6 grams. The Flax Seed weighed in at 7.6 grams. CHIA WINS!

Okay, so far the Chia Seed is winning 2-1 over Mr. Flax. We did not use the “Total Fat” calories to rank these seeds because one of the most beneficial ingredients in both is the abundance of EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids), also known as Omega 3′s and Omega 6′s. Since these are healthy fats we feel the total fat calories would be somewhat skewed by declaring one a winner in this category. Next up, the big one; The Omega round!

“Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health but the body can’ t make them — you have to get them through food. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other seafood including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function, as well as normal growth and development. They have also become popular because they may reduce the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least 2 times a week.”  – University of Maryland Medical Center

Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids – The Flax Seed dominates this one with a whopping 6388 mg’s per ounce while the Chia measures in at 4915 mg’s per ounce. FLAX WINS!

Omega 6 Fatty Acids – Once again the Flax Seed edges out the Chia with 1655 mg’s versus 1620 mg. FLAX WINS!

Next is a very important category; Omega 3 : 6 Ratio. Since the typical American diet contains way too many Omega 6′s and not enough Omega 3′s, a ratio of more Omega 3′s over the Omega 6′s is very favorable in any food.

Omega 3 : 6 Ratio – While the Chia Seed does nicely in this category yielding about a 3:1 ratio, the Flax Seed delivery a 4:1 ratio. FLAX WINS!

Well, it seems Flax has taken the lead with the score now 4-2. Let’s go to the last round and see who will take home the blue ribbon.

Calcium – Chia wins this one with 177 mg’s of Calcium per ounce versus 71.4 mg’s for the Flax Seed. CHIA WINS!

Sodium – Chia also wins this one with a lower sodium content of 5.3 mg’s versus 8.4 mg’s for the Flax Seed. CHIA WINS!

Magnesium – An ounce of Flax Seed contains 110 mg’s of magnesium while the Chia Seed weighs in with 0. FLAX WINS!

Potassium – Flax takes this one also with 228 mg’s versus 44.8 mg’s for the Chia. FLAX WINS!

Vitamins – Both the Chia and Flax have a similar vitamin profile with such vitamins as A, B’s, C, E, D and K, so we rank this as a tie. TIE!

Amino Acids – Chia wins this one with a more complete amino acid profile than the Flax Seed. CHIA WINS!

The winner – Mr. Flax! Flax takes this one 6-5 in a close heated battle. Now we can see clearly where each seed has it’s own benefits. Flax seeds provide an abundance of healthy fatty acids and more anti-inflammatory compounds than the Chia Seed. The Flax Seed also serves up a richer mineral profile and more protein than it’s close competitor. The Chia Seed on the other hand is lower in calories and salt, and higher in fiber. The Chia Seed has an impressive  Calcium content and has a better overall amino acid profile. Hopefully now we all have a little better understanding on what each seed can do for us. We love them both!

Acai Berries

The acai berry grows in the Amazon Rainforest on acai palm trees and looks like a purple marble or purple grape. The Acai berry (fruit) is 90% seed pit and 10% acai pulp and must be carefully handled before it can be consumed. During the process the acai berries with water are put into a machine and are agitated against one another. This process separates the acai pulp from the seed to produce a thick acai fruit pulp puree.

Acai berry has a unique tropical fruit flavor and provides a high level nutritional benefits. The acai berry contains high levels of antioxidants also known as anthocyanins. It also contains Omega Fatty Acids (healthy fats), Amino Acids, Fiber, Iron, along with many other vitamins and minerals.

Sencha Green Tea

Our premium picked Sencha green tea is made up of powerful antioxidants. that protect cells against damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants work by stabilizing free radicals before they cause harm. The antioxidants in green tea help to maintain healthy cells and tissues in the body. This is why green tea is so frequently used in antiaging & skincare products today. Green tea also contains Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major catechin found in green tea. EGCG is thought to interact with enzyme systems in the body, inhibiting destructive chemical reactions in our bodies that lead to disease. EGCG has been shown to protect DNA from ultraviolet damage.

What vitamins are found in green tea? Green tea contains Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, B2, and B6, Vitamin C and Vitamin K. Vitamins provide essential nutrients that sustain good health. Consuming the vitamins in green tea contributes to healthy bones and cells, and helps to prevent infections. Green tea contains theanine an amino acid said to promote relaxation without drowsiness. Theanine has been reported to directly stimulate the production of alpha brain waves, which are linked with deep states of relaxation and enhanced mental clarity.

Green tea does contain caffeine, but considerably less than a regular cup of brewed coffee. The caffeine content of an 8 ounce (240mls) cup of green tea is approximately 30mg, compared to approximately 100mg in a brewed cup of coffee of the same quantity. This means you can drink more green tea, without the side effects of too much caffeine, such as anxiety and nervousness. It is a commonly known that caffeine stimulates the nervous system, boosting alertness and relieving fatigue.

Go Easy on the Pork This Holiday

Pork chops and applesauce; while it sounds tasty there is something we must all know about “the other white meat” and there is a good reason to maybe choose another meat for your holiday dinner this year.
While many  health conscious families do indeed limit their intake of red meat and pork, usually this is because of the consistent decline in the quality of meat produced in today’s world. Many of the meats found on supermarket shelves today, minus organic and grass fed kinds, have a plethora of harmful toxins present. Much of this is due to the excessive use of antibiotics, hormones and fertilizers in today’s farming industry. But there is another problem with pork that many of us don’t know about.

Pork is one of the hardest foods in the world for our body to digest. In fact, studies have been done on pork digestion and it has been noted that pork can remain in ones digestive tract for as much as 5-6 hours after being eaten! Every morsel of food that we put in our body causes a stress on our body. This stress resulting from the metabolism of any food causes free radicals to be released throughout our body. Pork is the king of the free radicals when it comes to digestion. In fact, eating a pork sandwich (e.g., pork and bread) would result in the longest digestion times compared to any other food combination.
But wait, there is also another problem with pork that many of us do not know about. Because pork is so hard to digest it can interfere with other foods that have been eaten within the same reasonable time frame. For example, if you ate a bowl of grapes and then some pork, your body is in for a rough ride. As your body tries so hard to digest the pork you ate, the grapes now sit idle in your stomach, sometimes for many many hours. We all know what happens when you bite into an apple and then let it sit for a few minutes. Of course, it starts to “brown” and ferment. Well, the grapes in your stomach, or any fruit for that matter have now begun the fermenting process. This can cause some very uncomfortable conditions such as an upset stomach and acid indigestion. Choosing your meat wisely in the world we live in today and making wise choices when it comes to meats can help your body in many ways. Have a great holiday all!!!

Dr. Al Sears Talks About The Importance Of Tribulus Terrestris In Our Diet

I wrote my first book The “T” Factor in 2000. In it, I described testosterone as the king of hormones, and showed how not having enough can be deadly, but having more of it can help you live longer and better.

It’s only taken conventional medicine 12 years, but they’re finally starting to realize what I’ve been saying all this time. I just read a new study where researchers show that not having enough testosterone can be deadly for your heart.

They looked at almost 4,000 thousand people and followed them for over five years. Those who had the least free testosterone were 71% more likely to die from heart disease than those who had the most.1

In fact, in a brand-new review of other studies by the prestigious journal Nature, researchers showed that people with heart disease have significantly lower testosterone than healthy people.2

That doesn’t mean low testosterone causes heart disease. But what it does show is that letting your testosterone levels drop as you age can be a disaster for your heart.

I’ve helped thousands of patients avoid this situation by using a few simple, natural methods to bring their testosterone back to where it should be. Today I’m going to show you how I do it.

But first, let me answer the obvious question. Now that we know low testosterone is associated with heart disease, does raising testosterone make the risk go away?

They did a double blind, placebo-controlled study – the gold standard of research – to answer that question. Researchers looked at five groups of animals. In four of them, they stopped the animals’ ability to make testosterone. One group was left with normal testosterone.

They then tried to give the animals heart disease by feeding them the same diet that gives humans heart disease. In the four groups, two got testosterone, one got a nutrient that raises testosterone naturally, and the other got a placebo.

Researchers were shocked at the results. The animals that got a placebo developed heart disease. The other groups were protected.3

In a study that looked at other studies about raising testosterone, the authors write that all the evidence supports the benefits of raising low testosterone.4

Testosterone has a positive effect on your cardiovascular system by working its magic in a few different ways. It helps prevent internal blood clotting,5 increases blood flow to the heart6 and gives you better endothelial function,7 helping blood pressure.

But it’s not just your heart that benefits from normal testosterone. With normal levels, you’ll enjoy:

  • increased muscle strength
  • decreased body fat
  • better insulin sensitivity (lower blood sugar)
  • more power
  • better mobility
  • a greater sense of well-being
  • denser bones
  • increased potency
  • better mood
  • more energy
  • better mental function
  • clearer speech
  • higher HDL cholesterol8

So how do I help my patients raise their testosterone? There are a few ways to do it. There are testosterone gels, injections, and precursor supplements.

I don’t like to start with testosterone gels or injections. These options are usually not necessary. There are safer and more effective options for most men. In fact the most effective, safe and legal way to support healthy testosterone levels is with the herb Tribulus terrestris.

This little-known herb has long been used by Oriental and Ayervedic healers as a treatment for intimacy problems and to build muscle by boosting testosterone production.

By gently boosting testosterone levels, Tribulus terrestris can help increase red blood cell counts, helping the body to transport oxygen, particularly in older men.

Tribulus terrestris has been used in India for years to help treat impotence and fatigue. In one study, 50 patients complaining of lethargy and fatigue for periods of two to six months were observed to show an overall improvement of 45% in all symptoms after taking Tribulus terrestris.9

One study analyzed the effect of tribulus on healthy men. The men experienced an average 30% increase in testosterone levels10 after just 5 days of oral supplementation. This is about the average rise in testosterone that I have experienced in my clinic.

You can buy the bulk powder form of tribulus at online sellers like:

  • floridaherbhouse.com – Herbs stored in special climate-controlled, low-humidity rooms which keeps the potency and purity
  • herbstoreusa.com – Thousands of herbs fresh and in stock
  • purebulk.com – Facts, plant descriptions and a volumetric converter for each

If you want to take an extract as a supplement, look for one with at least 40% saponins (the active ingredient in tribulus). I have seen sellers that claim to have extracts with as much as 90% saponins, but 40% is standard.

How much do you need to take? Scientific studies use different amounts of tribulus for their trials. Some use 450mg, 750mg, and even as much as 1350mg a day of tribulus. At my clinic, I use a starting dose of 500mg (40% saponins) once a day, and increase to 750mg a day if necessary. It doesn’t usually take more than that to raise testosterone to normal levels.

OMG! – Mom & Dad are Eating Kelp and Chlorella!

Florida Herb House Herb Store

Hi folks and welcome to Florida Herb House’s official Green Gossip blog. My name is Steven Sharp and I am the founder of the popular online herb store Florida Herb House (www.FloridaHerbHouse.com) – and today the world has changed; changed for the better! My beloved mom and dad have said yes to chlorella and kelp. I am still pinching myself at the great news!

The Scenario: Start with an ever increasing problem of over processed foods, genetically modified crops, mineral weak crop soils, pesticide accumulation in the average American adult at levels 10 times higher than 30 years ago, beef contaminated with antibiotics and growth hormones and a perpetual rise in cancer rates in the US and oddly enough during a period of unmatched technological and medical advancements (go figure)!

Factor in two 70 year young adults who I cherish and love so much; one slightly more stubborn about food than the other, and both who eat like little birds. Well, yes they may get mad at me for saying that but I am talking about my mom and dad. Sure they are a little older now then from back in the 70′s but our world is also so much different now too and being 70 today is the new 50 for many health conscious folks. The main caveat that accompanies an aging adult is the plethora of  health debilitating diseases and ailments that we all become subject too as we get older. In fact, it is no wonder that much of our society is brainwashed into thinking prescription drugs are the only answer! Not to digress here too much, but to put this into perspective did you know that the average American citizen 65 and older spent around $600 per year on prescription drugs in 1995? Guess what that figure is today? In 2010 the same spent close to $3000 on prescription drugs! It gets worse though. In 2010 approximately 83% of Americans 65 and older took at least one prescription drug – i’m sorry but this has gotten out of control. While there may be a small percentage of prescription drugs that are needed by people, the majority of them simply treat the symptoms and not the source of the problem. This eventually leads to a cabinet full of prescription meds! Now you have the recipe for what I call a slow, silent death.

So after years of talking about the problems that I mentioned above, my dad, who beat prostate cancer a few years ago and who has been battling chronic post nasal drip and inflammation for years, and my mom who is battling osteoporosis and arthritis, decided to reach into their bucket list and go see a wellness doctor – you know the kind that treats a problem naturally and not with a slew of prescription slips. They are now into their second week of seeing Dr. Barone and they have not stopped talking about him! Even better yet, they have both started taking our organic kelp and natural chlorella superfood powders daily! More on Dr. Barone in a minute.

Broken Wall Chlorella

Broken Wall Chlorella - The chlorella we sell at Florida Herb House is of the highest quality and is cultivated without the use of chemicals. All chlorella we sell has undergone the DynoMill patented process for "cracking" the chlorella cell wall which drastically increases its absorption rates.

Chlorella and kelp have a magical synergy when combined together and compliment each other so very well. For my mom, it is the rich calcium content in the kelp and chlorella that are doing the job. This is not just any calcium either. Unlike calcium supplements that have poor bio-availability (i.e., absorption and availability to cells), the calcium in the kelp and chlorella is paired with natural co-factors such as natural magnesium and vitamin D which increase the bio-availability of the calcium. Maximizing calcium absorption is a key to the battle against arthritis and osteoporosis.

For my dad, the health benefits of these two green superfoods are extensive also. First off, since my dad suffers from chronic post nasal drip and inflammation, it is likely that his Omega 3 & 6 fatty acid balance is way out of whack. These essential fatty acids (Omega-3 = Alpha-Linolenic Acid  &  Omega-6 = Linoleic Acid) must come from our food. The problem that exists here in the USA is the amount of foods that we eat that are rich in the Omega-6 fatty acids but lacking in the Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids cause inflammation while the Omega-3′s are anti-inflammatory. The average person in the USA maintains a diet that has  a ratio of approximately ten times the intake of Omega-6′s compared to Omega-3′s! You won’t find these figures in the typical Mediterranean diet though and you also won’t find the as many sick people!

Organic Kelp Powder

Organic Kelp Powder - Loaded with natural calcium, vitamin D, chelated minerals, chlorophyll and 24 other vitamins!

After taking a look at my dad’s diet I came to the conclusion that he was in fact consuming hardly any Omega-3′s in his diet and an abundance of Omega-6′s. This brings two words to mind – “Inflammation Galore.” The chlorella that he is now taking contains a natural form of Omega-3 called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Now here’s a little secret. Remember the Omega-3 Alpha-Linolenic Acid that we must get from food? Well our bodies use this Alpha-Linolenic Acid to make DHA. The DHA in chlorella is the same DHA that our body makes! We just saved our body the painstaking task of creating this all important DHA! Since Alzheimers partially runs in our family too, my dad was very excited to learn that a diet rich in Omega-3′s has been linked to a delay in the onset of Alzheimers. This is great news! Additionally, the chlorella is rich in vitamin B12 (just 3 grams of chlorella contains 70% of the RDA for vitamin B12), which is another vitamin that Alzheimers patients are often deficient in. He is also taking 2 tablespoons of our organic brown flax seeds in his daily drink for the Omega-3 ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), fiber and lignan content.

The best news of all is that my dad has tossed out two of his prescription drugs, and both my mom and dad are heading down the path to optimal health and a decade of 70 something fun! I will keep all of you informed on their progress. Should you wish to get the full herbal drink recipe that my mom and dad are taking then email me at Steve@FloridaHerbHouse.com.

In closing I would like to extend my personal thank you to a doctor who has made me proud to be a herbal activist, a doctor who has helped to change my mom and dad’s look at health and nutrition, and a doctor who truly is one of the finest wellness experts in his field – Dr. Richard Barone.
